New Era is a family-owned company and has been for four generations. Ehrhardt Koch, who founded the company in 1920, was a turn of the century pioneer with the goal of revolutionizing the headwear business. Ehrhardt modernized the headwear manufacturing process in order to combine fashion and relevance with quality and authenticity. After a few years, the trend for fashion caps dwindled, Koch and his son Harold, set their sights on the company’s next business venture – The introduction of the Baseball Cap.
By combining knowledge from the fashion industry with the updates to the sports caps, New Era introduced the world to the iconic 59FIFTY fitted cap in 1954. New Era grew from a company supplying a few teams with caps to supplying almost every Major League Baseball (MLB) team and their Minor League affiliates with its 59FIFTY fitted cap.
Chris Koch, David’s son and the fourth generation Koch to head the company, picked up where his father left off. New Era’s unique approach to designing caps to help secure a partnership with the National Football League in 2010. This, coupled with the addition of apparel and accessories to it’s portfolio and having New Era Products sold in over 70 countries, has transformed New Era from manufacturing company to a sought-after global lifestyle brand.
